"Katy Perry's 'Lifetimes' Sparks Controversy: Environmental Inquiry into Filming on Protected Dunes"

After Katy Perry’s latest music video for "Lifetimes" debuted on August 8, the pop diva has stumbled into a bit of a controversy, with environmental authorities taking a closer look at her recent shoot.

The Balearic Islands’ Environmental Department has launched an inquiry into the matter. The issue arose because Perry’s team allegedly failed to secure the required permits for filming on S’Espalmador, a protected area renowned for its delicate dune ecosystems. The video features Perry’s energetic arrival on the island, where she joyfully interacts with beachgoers, performs an exhilarating cliff dive, and frolics in the sand, before the scene transitions to a lively nightclub atmosphere.

S’Espalmador, located within the Ses Salines de Ibiza and Formentera Natural Park, is celebrated for its well-preserved dunes, which are considered a key ecological asset in the Balearic Islands. The Balearic Islands tourism site emphasizes the ecological importance of these dunes, highlighting their vulnerability.

The Environmental Department has stated that while the filming did not constitute an outright “environmental crime,” proper authorization is crucial for any video or photo shoots in such protected regions.

Perry’s team has yet to respond to the medias requests for comment on the situation. “Lifetimes” is the second single from Perry’s upcoming album, 143, which is set to drop on September 20. Her first single from the album, “Woman’s World,” faced backlash for allegedly catering to the male gaze despite its supposedly empowering lyrics. Music fans have described the track as a “flop” due to its simplistic lyrics and Perry’s choice to collaborate with Dr. Luke, a producer with a controversial reputation.

In reaction to the criticism, Perry defended the single in a behind-the-scenes clip, explaining that the project was meant to be a playful and exaggerated take on the concept of female empowerment.

In June, it was revealed that Perry had brought back notable collaborators for her latest album, including Stargate, Dr. Luke, and Max Martin. These industry heavyweights have previously worked on Perry’s biggest hits, such as “I Kissed a Girl” and “Dark Horse.” This new collaboration with Dr. Luke comes after his recent legal settlement with Kesha, who had accused him of abuse in a high-profile lawsuit dating back to 2014.
